The film was adapted from Tamil novel Pennmanam by Lakshmi Tripurasundari. It was remade in Tamil as Iruvar Ullam (1963) by L. V. Prasad starring Sivaji Ganesan and Hindi as Hamrahi (1963) by T. Prakash Rao starring Rajendra Kumar and Jamuna Ramanarao

Atma (b: 31 October 1925 – d: 8 June 2001) was an Indian film journalist, director and producer known for his works in Bollywood and Telugu cinema. He has garnered three National Film Awards.Before entering film industry, he worked as a journalist for magazine Prajashakti in 1952 and as an editor for the magazineJwala.His debut film was Bharya Bhartalu in 1961. He has directed about 30 films in Telugu and Hindi and also produced a few films under Atma Arts. His film Raja Aur Runk went on to become a silver jubilee. He introduced Krishnam Raju to the film industry with his Nandi Award winning Telugu film Chilaka Gorinka in 1966.

About The Story:

BharyaBharthalu_po_2831913gAnand (Akkineni), son of a public prosecutor (Gummadi) finds his exorbitant and Casanova-like lifestyle. Sharada (Krishna Kumari) is a beautiful school teacher. Anand likes her, but she refuses his affection. She is compelled to get married to him by her parents. She initially dislikes, but subsequently falls in love with him. All appears to be fine, until his father finds out that Anand is leading a double life. Hema (Girija) past girlfriend of Anand tries to blackmail him. She invites him to her house. While returning from her house, someone kills her. Anand was arrested on the benefit of doubt. Lawyer Ramanandam takes up the case and with the help of Sharada proves that Anjaneyulu (Padmanabham) murdered Hema. Finally the Wife and Husbands unite happily.
